The Brief

Our clients, a couple transitioning from the culturally rich neighborhoods of St Kilda and Balaclava to suburban Beaumaris, sought to create a home that reflected their outgoing and worldly personalities. They envisioned a space that could seamlessly host family and friends while showcasing their love for music, books, and fine wine. The challenge lay in translating the essence of inner-city living to a typical suburban setting, creating a modern, inner-urban style house that would stand out among the mediocre builder-grade dwellings surrounding it. With the client being a skilled builder himself, no challenge was too tough, allowing our design to capture their imagination fully.

The Approach

Our design strategy centered on creating a layered effect, achieved through the thoughtful application of artwork, photographs, and patterns that resonated with the clients' tastes. Drawing inspiration from the couple's favorite urban hangouts, we incorporated an industrial aesthetic paired with unusual material choices. The kitchen, designed as the heart of the home, was given special attention to ensure it was both spacious and practical, functioning as a natural extension of the living space. Throughout the process, we worked closely with the client, refining details and perfecting the quality of their home, leveraging their hands-on approach to elevate the overall design.

The Outcome

Luna Place stands as a unique beacon of urban sophistication in suburban Beaumaris. The home's striking features include a minimalist staircase accentuated by a timber-clad feature wall, creating a breathtaking entry point flooded with natural light. The kitchen, with its continuous bench leading into the butler's pantry, exemplifies both practicality and unique design. Outside, the compact alfresco area and pool are brought to life with striking graffiti artwork, offering a visual nod to the urban landscape of St Kilda. Built to last, with almost every component manufactured on-site or locally in Melbourne, Luna Place is not just a home but a sustainable, enduring piece of art. It's a space that invites you to return, enjoy a friendly bottle of red, listen to Nick Cave, and share travel stories - a true reflection of its owners' vibrant lifestyle and a win for design that prioritizes personal expression and quality craftsmanship.
